Philosophy of Ueba Esou
Since the first owner, Sobei, established Ueba Esou (gofun dealer) in Toro-cho, Shimogyo-ku (south part of Kyoto City), in 1751, our company has been producing and retailing paints and pigments exclusively for use in Japanese painting. We offer a wide range of products, including mud paints, stick paints, and gofun with the trademark “Byakko (white fox).”
In defiance of a trend towards simplification and machinization in modern society, Ueba Esou has been rigidly committed to its traditional manual production methods. The reason for this is we have always respected and sought to protect “the sensitivity and five senses of the artisan.” As a time-honored art materials dealer in the business of expression of color, we believe we should maintain this high level of professionalism. Although our products might look the same as others, professional artists often tell us that they form the perfect partnership with the brush.
We pay extra attention to the quality control of our products, and manufacture and provide them under the sincere policy of maintaining the trust that has been put in our name. Currently, we are dealing with 700 items encompassing a range of approx. 1,200 colors. We hope you will enjoy the beauty of traditional Japanese culture.
